RONALD MCDONALD CHARITIES
At Boston University, our sorority holds two major philanthropy events a year: Friday Night Lights, which takes place in the Fall and ADPidol in the Spring. All students are invited to attend and/or participate in both of these fun events as they are always open to the entire Boston University population. All of the funds we raise are donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities.
What are Ronald McDonald House charities?
Alpha Delta Pi is proud of its long-standing relationship with Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). Since our partnership, which began in 1979, Alpha Delta Pi has contributed more than $6 million to this worthwhile organization. The mission of RMHC is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children. RMHC makes an immediate, positive impact on children’s lives through its global network of chapters and three core programs: Ronald McDonald Houses, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles. RMHC also provides funding to other not-for-profit organizations whose programs focus on children in need.
Today, there are over 300 Ronald McDonald Houses in 52 countries, whose function is to provide comfort, care and "a home-away-from-home" for the families of seriously ill children while they are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. In addition to donating money to RMHC, many Alpha Delta Pi collegiate chapters and alumnae associations spend their time and energy volunteering at these houses. They provide the kind of support that only sisters can give - cooking meals for families, cleaning and repairing areas of the houses, and playing with the children who are staying at Ronald McDonald Houses. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Friday Night Lights is our fall philanthropy event open to all organizations on campus. The event consists of teams of four women and four men who compete in a bracket-style flag football tournament. All teams pay to play and spectators are encouraged to give donations. This event is always a huge success because everyone is able to come together for friendly competition in order to win bragging rights and sometimes even a trophy. Last year we proudly raised over $5000 for Ronald McDonald House!
Each spring we hold ADPidol as our philanthropy event. ADPidol is a singing competition similar to American Idol, where individuals or groups from different campus organizations compete for first, second and third place, as well as a fan favorite. The judges usually consist of advisors, alumni, previous ADPidol winners and BU faculty members. This past spring we were thrilled to have our very own Dean Elmore attend the event as a judge! Overall, it is a fun-filled event with tons of talent and laughter. We were able to raise over $5000 for the Ronald McDonald House through this event last spring!
DINNERS AT THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE
With a Ronald McDonald House in Charlestown, we are lucky enough to have our sisters bring supplies to cook a delicious dinner for the families staying there. During past visits to RMH locations, our sisters have cooked for anywhere between 1 and 22 families. We prepare all the food in the kitchen of the house and set up a buffet for the families to come and eat as they please. This past spring, our sisters made homemade macaroni and cheese, fresh salad and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Helping these families is not only a bonding experience for our sisters, but an extremely rewarding experience as well. Seeing the grateful expressions on the families' faces is proof that we really did make a difference!
